Report #016 – Darvaza Gas Crater

Scott the Dot‘s latest postcard is absolutely on fire!

This week I visited the Darvaza Gas Crater in Turkmenistan which is a natural wonder located in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan. It is also known as the “Door to Hell” because of its fiery appearance.

The gas crater was created accidentally in 1971 when a drilling rig collapsed into an underground cavern filled with natural gas. In an effort to prevent the release of poisonous gases, the gas was set on fire, but it has been burning ever since, creating a fiery pit in the middle of the desert.

Next week – another Scott the Dot Anecdote!
